Dear Sir,

In reply to your letter of the 29th ultimo, I have carefully considered the proposed amendments in the drawings accompanying the above requisition and now offer the following comments thereon.

2. I have no doubt that the connection of the comice

roof ironwork with the main compound/girders was considered in Hong Kong and that it was not adopted on account of the likelihood

of the expansion and contract ion of the latter causing the cornice to crack. On these grounds it would appear preferable to connect the cornice ironwork as shewn on the Colonial Drawing with the three 9" x 4" steel joists forming the beans over open- ings. Besides the fact of these beans being encased in concrete and therefore less subject to variations in temperature, any expansion or contraction that may occur in them will not affect the cornice so prejudicially as similar variations in the main

compound root girier,

With regard to the other wall, where it is proposed to introduce an 8" x 6" steel joist, I would point out that the
